Muir of Ord(2)
Glen Ord Distillery(10 May 2003)
Dingwallからバスに乗ってMuir of Ordまでのチケットを求める。蒸留所へ行くことを伝えると、幹線道路から蒸留所方面へ行く支道との分かれ道で降ろしてくれた。そこから少し歩き、大きなOrd Maltingの建物の横を過ぎると蒸留所のキルンが見えてきた。近づくと駐車場から黒い影が一斉に茂みへ向かう。野うさぎ達を驚かしてしまったようだ。土曜日なので人も少なく、駐車場でミーティングでもしていたのかな。
I got on a bus to Inverness and bought a ticket to Muir of Ord, and I told the bus driver that I went to Glen Ord Distillery. The driver stopped the bus at a junction of a branch road to distillery. I walked for about 10 minutes after I got off the bus. I passed beside the large building of Glen Ord maltings, then I came in sight a malt kiln and warehouse. Suddenly, something were scattered to a bush. I seemed to surprise wild rabbits.. They may have had a meeting at a car park.

Brora(4)
Old And New (7 May 2003)
隣接する場所に蒸留所を建てることは珍しくないようでスコットランドにはいくつかの隣り合った蒸留所や同一敷地内に2つの蒸留所が見られる。そのほとんどは生産力の強化だろうけどClynelishとBroraの関係は少し違う。生産設備の改築目的で建てられた新しいClynelishが安定稼働した段階で閉鎖される予定だったのかも知れない。閉鎖する口実としては1980年代のウィスキー不況はちょうどよかったのかも。
理由はどうであれ、閉鎖されてから30年以上経つBroraは残り少ない貴重なモルトウィスキーになってしまった。

Alnessの町の西側、River Averon沿いにあるTeaninich蒸留所は1817年に創設となっているがAlfred Barnardの著書には1800年と記述されている。Alness周辺は古くからウィスキーの密造が盛んな地域でそのあたりが関係しているのかも知れない。
1934年にUDV社の前身であるScottish Malt Distillersが買収し、1970年代前半には近代的設備に改装され、古い建物はすべて取り壊されてしまった。その時にUDV社の共通仕様である大きなガラス窓のStill Houseが建てられた。
現在はUDV社の中でも最大級の生産能力のある蒸留所で生産能力は約600万リットルとなっている。ちなみに19世紀末は約36万リットルの生産量だった。ドランブイの原酒となっていると聞いたこともあるが定かではない。

Dalmore Distillery(9 May 2003)
Dalmore蒸留所に着いたのはちょうど昼休み時。事務所には誰もいなかった。予約はしていないのでちょっと心配になる。見学者用施設はないが見学させてくれるはずだ。1時を回ったので再度事務所を訪れるとマネージャが笑顔で出迎えてくれた。さっそく所内を案内してもらう。広い敷地と大きなウェアハウス、そして独特の形をしたポットスティルとキルン。私にとっては非常に印象に残る蒸留所だった。
見学後、事務所に戻って試飲タイム、というよりはマネージャと二人でウィスキーの話をしながらダルモアを飲んだ。英会話を始めてちょうど1年で英語力にはまだ自信がなかったがウィスキー好きの酔っぱらいの間には国境はもちろん言葉の壁もない。
I arrived at Dalmore Distillery about half past twelve, just lunch break. Nobody was in the manager's office. I didn't have an appointment, but I thought that I would probably be able to see in distillery.
I visited the manager's office again around thirteen o'clock, so manager greeted me with a smile. Then he guided me in the distillery.
Dalmore Distillery was on the large site, had large warehouses, unique shape of kiln, and pot stills. I felt Dalmore Distillery was really impressive distillery.
After that, we returned to office and I had a tasting of Dalmore single malt whisky. In a minute, manager also started to drink whisky, and talked about whisky with me. It was like drinking with friends at a pub rather than a tasting. When I visited to Dalmore Distillery, I wasn't much good at English conversation. However there was no border, no wall of language between the two of whisky drinkers.

Eddertonの町はずれの線路沿いに位置するBalbleir蒸留所。その歴史は古く、創業は1790年となっているがそれ以前から密造は行われていた。また、周辺はピート層に覆われ、ウィスキー造りに適した地域でもある。
北ハイランドの蒸留所はポットスティルに特徴のあるものが多い。Balbrair蒸留所のスティルは太い、丸みを帯びた形状で同地区のGlenmorangie蒸留所とは非常に対象的だ。
Balbrair Distillery lies on the outskirts of Edderton, near North Highland Lines Railway. They have an old history, it was established in 1790. However, illicit whisky had been made before. There is enough peat and water. It is a good area for making whisky.
Distilleries in Northern Highland have a unique shaped pot still. Pot still of Balbrair Distillery is thick, rounded shape. It is in contrast with a pot still of Glenmorangie Distillery.

創業者の資金が十分ではなかったため、ポットスティルはジン蒸留に使われた中古品しか購入できなかった。ところがそれがGlenmorangie独特の風味を生み出すことになった。創業者は強運の持ち主だったのかも知れない。ポットスティルの高さは約5mとスコットランドで一番高い。
Glenmorangie Distillery is really famous for their pot stills which have a tall and thin neck. It was established in 1843. Most whisky sell as own products. It is uncommon distillery in Scotland.

ウェアハウス以外は使用されていないBrora蒸留所の建物は傷みがひどい。かろうじてモルトキルンだけが"ここは蒸留所だった"と主張しているようだった。
形あるものはいつか失われる。でもその大切さは失われてから気付く。その時になって後悔しないように今を大事にしようと思う今日この頃。
The buildings of Brora Distillery, which weren't used except warehouses, were damaged badly. Just as if the malt kiln claimed that this is distillery!
A thing with a figure will be lost someday, but we understand that it is really important when we lost it.

Pulteney蒸留所の南側に出るとスコットランドらしい牧草地の中にぽつんと学校(Wick South Primary School)があった。側には小川があって蒸留所に流れ込んでいる。この小川をさかのぼると仕込み水の採取地である湖があるのだろうか。
童心に帰り、子供の頃のように川を上ろうかとも思ったがそれ程時間に余裕はない。
大人になって自由になるものは増えたけど、自由になる時間は確実に失っている。
Wick South Primary School is in the south of Pulteney Distillery and there was a burn, called "Mill Lode" next to the school. The burn flew into the distillery. The loch, which provide water for Pulteney Distillery, would lie on the upper stream.
I wanted to go up the burn, feeling like a child again. But I didn't have enough a free time.
I think I've got something to make free, but I've lost my free time since I grew up a man

リーダー的存在だったWilliam Wallaceを処刑したEdward1世の思惑通りにはいかず、スコットランドの反乱は収まらなかった。そして志半ばの1307年に戦場への途中で死去する。後を継いだその息子、Edward2世は歴史上稀な愚王。政治も戦いも父親とは雲泥の差があった。
その幸運を掴み取ったのがRobert de Bruceだった。13世紀末の混乱を作り出した王位継承権を主張する貴族の一人だったが国内の混乱をうまく収めて最終的に1314年、BannockburnでEdward2世率いるイングランド軍を打ち破り、スコットランドに主権を取り戻した。
Edward 1st thought that he would be able to suppress the rebellion of Scotland because he had executed William Wallace, who was a leader of Scotland. But it didn't have an effect and Edward 1st died on the way to the battlefield in 1307 before he could realize his ambition. The Edward 2nd, who was the son of Edward 1st and the successor to the throne, was one of the most foolish king in English history. He was very different for politics and war.
Fortunately, Robert de Bruce got the chance. He was one of the nobles who claimed the right of succession and confused Scotland in the end of 13th. However, he suppressed the confusion of Scotland. Finally, he won the battle with England in Bannockburn in 1314 and got the sovereignty of Scotland again.

対峙したイングランド軍に向かってHamish(William Wallaceの幼なじみ)がWallaceの剣を投げる。それを合図にRobert de Bruceを先頭にスコットランド軍が突撃を開始した。
映画"Brave Heart"の感動的なラストシーンはBannockburnが舞台となっている。でもRobert de Bruceが大軍に向かって先陣切って突撃するわけがなく、イングランド軍の先鋒を務める部隊との戦いでRobert de Bruceは敵の大将を討ち取った。それに勇気づけられたスコットランド軍はなぜか川(Bannock Burn)を背にして陣取ったイングランド軍に正面から槍、側面から弓で攻撃し、川に追い落として勝利した。明らかにイングランド軍の作戦ミスだった。
Hamish, who was a friend of William Wallace's from his childhood, threw the claymore of Wallace at English army in front of him. It became a signal, Robert de Bruce was in the van and Scottish soldiers rushed English army.
The last scene of the movie "Brave Heart" is laid in Bannockburn. However, I don't think that Robert de Bruce was in the van of Scottish army. In fact, Robert de Bruce killed the leader of English vanguard. It had encouraged Scottish soldiers and fortunately, English army took up their position with Bannock Burn in the background. Scottish spearman was attacked from the front and archer was attacked from the side. English army was driven off on the river. They made a mistake of strategy.

スコットランドで捕らえられ、ロンドンに連行されたWilliam Wallaceはロンドン塔に収監された。そして形式だけの裁判を受け、四つ裂きの刑と決まった。その後、London市内を引き回された後、公開処刑場で処刑された。
娯楽の少なかった当時は処刑も見世物の一つで特に反逆者(イングランドにとっての)の処刑はイングランド国民にとって、とても爽快だっただろう。
現在その場所は病院(St. Bartholomew's Hospital)になっている。
William Wallace was taken to London and imprisoned in London Tower. Then, he was judged by English. His judge was He was hanged, drawn and quartered.
After a trial, William Wallace was dragged around London, and he was beheaded and cut into four parts.

Wallace Monument (23 Sep 2005)
Stirling Bridgeの戦いの前、William Wallaceは丘の上に登り、イングランド軍の動向を偵察している。
そのAbbey Craigの丘に1877年に8年の歳月を経て建てられたのがNational Wallace Monument。67m、4階建ての塔の中にはWilliam Wallaceにまつわるいろいろな展示がある。
バス停のある駐車場付近から丘の上まで結構な距離がある上に登り坂。そして塔の上まで246段の急で狭い螺旋階段を登り、ようやく最上階まで到達する。もちろんエレベータはない。スコットランド旅行は体力が必要だ。
因みに1997年に駐車場に作られたWilliam Wallaceの銅像は映画"Brave Heart"の主演、メル・ギブソンそっくりで映画をよく思っていない人々から排除運動が起きた。映画としては好きだけどストーリーは歴史から大幅に脚色されている。
Before the Battle of Stirling Bridge, Sir William Wallace went up to the hill, called Abbey Craig, and he scouted English Army.
National Wallace Monument was built on the hill of Abbey Craig in 1877. It's 67m height, 4 storeyed tower, there are some exhibitions about William Wallace and Scotland.
When you go to the tower, you have to go up the hill from bus stop near a car park. It's really hard. Then you have to go up 246 steps of the spiral staircase to the top. Of cource there is no elevator.
In 1997, the statue of Wallace was built in the car park. However, it seems to be Mel Gibson, the main actor of "Brave Heart". Stirling Bridgeの戦いの前、William Wallaceは丘の上に登り、イングランド軍の動向を偵察している。
そのAbbey Craigの丘に1877年に8年の歳月を経て建てられたのがNational Wallace Monument。67m、4階建ての塔の中にはWilliam Wallaceにまつわるいろいろな展示がある。
バス停のある駐車場付近から丘の上まで結構な距離がある上に登り坂。そして塔の上まで246段の急で狭い螺旋階段を登り、ようやく最上階まで到達する。もちろんエレベータはない。スコットランド旅行は体力が必要だ。
因みに1997年に駐車場に作られたWilliam Wallaceの銅像は映画"Brave Heart"の主演、メル・ギブソンそっくりで映画をよく思っていない人々から排除運動が起きた。映画としては好きだけどストーリーは歴史から大幅に脚色されている。
Before the Battle of Stirling Bridge, Sir William Wallace went up to the hill, called Abbey Craig, and he scouted English Army.
National Wallace Monument was built on the hill of Abbey Craig in 1877. It's 67m height, 4 storeyed tower, there are some exhibitions about William Wallace and Scotland.
When you go to the tower, you have to go up the hill from bus stop near a car park. It's really hard. Then you have to go up 246 steps of the spiral staircase to the top. Of cource there is no elevator.
In 1997, the statue of Wallace was built in the car park. However, it seems to be Mel Gibson, the main actor of "Brave Heart". 1297年、Englandの王、Edward1世の弾圧に対して立ち上がったWilliam Wallaceは彼の元に集まった民衆を指揮してゲリラ戦を行い、いくつかの小規模な戦いでイングランド軍に勝利を得た。これに呼応して各地で民衆の反乱が広がっていった。
これを鎮圧しようとしたイングランド軍はスコットランド中部に攻め入り、Stirling付近のRiver Forthに架かる橋を挟んで対峙した。

Stirlingからバスで北西に20分程のところにあるDeanstonの町は1785年、River Teith沿いにあったAdelphi紡績工場の従業員のために造られた町でその工場の従業員はDeanstonか隣のDouneに住んでいた。
その工場は1785年創業の当時の最先端技術がつぎ込まれたもので、設計者はRichard Arkwright。彼は1768年に水力紡績機を発明し、その後いくつもの紡績工場を建設している。Deanstonもその中の1つだった。英国における産業革命の重要人物の一人で1786年にナイトの称号を受けている。
工場閉鎖後にその建物を利用して造られたDeanston蒸留所は1965年に創業された比較的新しい蒸留所。しかし建物は歴史的建造物として保存が義務づけられているという興味深い蒸留所だ。
Deanston lies on the south bank of the River Teith, it takes about 20 minutes from Stirling by bus. The town was built for workers of Adelphi cotton mill in 1785. All workers lived either in Deanston or Doune, a neighboring town.
Adelphi cotton mill was established in 1785, designed by Richard Arkwright. He invented a water-powered spinning machine in 1768. After that, he built some cotton mill in UK. He is one of the most important person for Industrial Revolution of UK. He was also knighted in 1786.
The cotton mill was closed in 1965, then converted into Deanston Distillery.
Deanston Distillery was established in 1965, however some buildings are old and important. They have to preserve them as a historical heritage of Industrial Revolution.

スコットランドの町では必ずTourist Informationへ立ち寄る。Ordnance Surveyの地図で場所を確かめ、Tourist Informationへ向かった。が、そこには無かった。地図の改訂は数年に1度なのでこういうことはよくある。主要道路には案内板が出ているのでそれを頼りに歩いていくと、そこにはまるで蒸留所のような建物があった。"TI"の看板があるので間違いはない。
スタッフに聞くと、蒸留所ではなく、古い製粉工場とのこと。でもモルトキルンのような建物を見つけると何か宝物を探し当てたような気がする。
When I stay in the town of Scotland, I always go to Tourist Information. Because I can get a street map, a latest time table and some souvenirs. I checked the point of Tourist Information in Perth on the map of Ordnance Survey, then I went to the Tourist Information. But it was nothing.
"Don't worry!"
Usually, there is a direction board on the main street. When I arrived a Tourist Information, I watched a interesting building. It was like a distillery. There was the sign of "TI", so I didn't make a mistake.
I asked to the staff of Tourist Information. According to him, it was a building of old mill.

The Statue of Towser in Glenturret Distillery (17 Sep 2005)
せっかくGlenturret蒸留所まで来たのだから何かTowserに纏わるものを撮りたい。そう思った私は蒸留所内を探した。しかし広くない所内には唯一、銅像があるのみだった。その横のキルンを改造したショップにはポスターが1種類だけあった。これ欲しい・・・しかし在庫切れだった。ショップから出てきた私をTowserが寂しそうに見ている様な気がした。
偉大なるウィスキーキャット、Towserがこんな扱いを受けていいのだろうか。何かすっきりしない気持ちで蒸留所を後にした。
I have always wanted that when I go to Glenturret Distillery, I take some photos about Towser, the most famous whisky cat. So I looked for something about Towser, but there was only the statue of Towser. And there was a poster of Towser at the distilleries shop next to the statue. but they didn't have a stock.
When I went out of shop, I thought Towser was really sad.

Perthからバスで40分程西へ行ったCrieffの町の近く(といっても2km程距離がある)に位置するGlenturret蒸留所は1775年に創業されたスコットランドで最も古い蒸留所の1つ。少なくとも1717年から同じ場所で不法蒸留所として操業されていたという記録が存在する。
またいち早くビジターセンターを建設したことでも知られている。このビジターセンターは2002年に改装され、"Famous Grouse Experience"としてスコットランドでも有数の観光名所になっている。
が、私はこの内容は好きになれない。ウィスキーの製造工程の見学は縮小され、後はCM用のビデオを見たり、キルンを改造したスタジオで雷鳥から見たスコットランドの立体映像が放映される。
右を見ても左を見ても雷鳥ばっかり。Famous Grouseは嫌いではないが、Glenturretのアイドルはタウザーでしょ。タウザーはいずこへ・・・

And also it is a first distilleries to make a visitor centre in Scotland. It was rebuilt in 2002 and now, it has been one of the best tourist attraction in Scotland, called "Famous Grouse Experience"
However, I don't think that it is a great attraction for whisky connoisseures. The time for seeing the process of making whisky is very short, and you have to watch a 3D movie from a point of view of flying grouse at the studio room which was rebuilt from old malt kiln.
I don't want to see a grouse in Glenturret. I want to see Towser. Where is Towser?

13～15世紀の間、スコットランドの首都として政治の中心となった。日本で言えば京都や奈良のような町だろうか。
The start of Perth dates back to about 1st Century. The present town was started in 12th Century by King David 1st. And the first bridge across the River Tay was build at the same time. Perth was one of the most important town.
Perth was also the capital of Scotland between 13th and 15th. If it says in Japan, it will be a town like Kyoto or Nara.

Pitlochryからバスに乗り、途中で乗り換えてRiver Tay沿いの道路を走ること約40分。美しい川の流れとは反対の方向にAberfeldy蒸留所の美しいキルンが見えてくる。
Aberfeldy蒸留所は1896年にJohn Dewar's & Sons社によってブレンデッドウィスキー用のモルト原酒確保の目的で建設された。
1998年よりラム酒で有名なBacardi社の所有となり、その時に大規模なビジターセンタが建設された。その設備と内容はとても充実しており、ウィスキーファンならずとも楽しめるものとなっている。展示説明用のハンディターミナルは各国言語のものが用意されていて、日本語があるのには驚いた。すべての人がウィスキーミュージアムとして楽しめる蒸留所だと思う。
If you want to go to Aberfeldy Distillery, you should take the bus from Pitlochry to Aberfeldy. It takes about 40 minutes. You can enjoy the good view of River Tay.

Glendullan蒸留所からKeith-Dufftown Railwayを挟んだ向かい側に残るParkmore蒸留所。ウィスキーブームの真っ只中の1894年に創業された蒸留所はそのブームが過ぎ去った1931年に閉鎖されるという時代に翻弄された歴史を持つ。
閉鎖後は広い敷地に建てられたウェアハウスだけが使用された。今でもウィスキーを造っていてもおかしくない蒸留所は後に"1890年代のウィスキーブームの中で、外見的には最も完全に生き残った失われた蒸留所"という称号を与えられ、人々の記憶に残った。現在も観光案内用のフリーペーパーの地図には名前とその位置が書かれている。
There is a ruins of old distillery, called Parkmore Distillery in Dufftown. It lies on the opposite side of Keith-Dufftown Railway from Glendullan Distillery. It was build in 1894, in the middle of the Whisky Boom in 1890s. And closed in 1931, after the finish of the boom. It has a history of making a fool by the boom.
After the closing, warehouses had been used by other disttillers until 1980s because of massive capacity of warehouse.
Most buildings are still remained and it looks like operational. Parkmore Distillery is described as "The most perfect survivor of the Whisky Boom in 1890s in distilleries".
