Cawdor (2)
Royal Brackla Distillery(11 May 2006)
コーダーの少し東の三叉路でバスは止まり、
"その道を南に行けば城に行けるよ"と運転手は私に教えてくれた。私は彼にお礼を言ってバスを降りた。バス停ではないけれど、コーダー城に行くと言ってチケットを買ったのでより近いところで降ろしてくれた。
目的地はコーダー城ではないけれど、蒸留所よりその近くの有名な観光地への行き方を尋ねる方が話が早い。スコットランド人全てがウィスキーに詳しいわけではない。
その三叉路から東へ更に2km程、写真を撮りながら20分ぐらい歩いた時、牧草地や菜の花畑に囲まれるRoyal Brackla蒸留所が見えた。
ようやく着いたという気持ちだったけどそこからまだもう少し歩かなければいけない。でも蒸留所が見えて少しは気が楽になった。
The bus was stopped at the intersection on the east of Cawdor.
"You can go to Cawdor Castle to the south." the bus driver said to me. I gave thanks to him and got off the bus. The bus was stopped near Cawdor Castle as I said I went to the Castle when I bought a ticket.
My destination was not the Castle, but if I asked the way to the distillery, someone would not know about the distillery. Not all Scottish know about whisky very well.
And When I walked for about 2km from the intersection to the east and took some photographs, I saw Royal Brackla Distillery surrounded by glass fields and rape blossoms fields.
I thought that I arrived the distillery at last, but I had to walk to the distillery more a short distance. However I was really happy because of seeing Royal Brackla Distillery.

Royal Brackla蒸留所からCawderの町に戻り、バスまで1時間程の時間を潰そうとパブを探した。町は静かで人と出会わない。ようやく見つけたパブはランチタイムとディナータイムの営業で今は準備中。しかたがないのでようやく見つけたコンビニエンスストア(?)でちょっと休憩。
英国とは言えども、いつでもどこでもパブでビールが飲めるわけではない。
I came back to Cawdor from the distillery. The next bus to Inverness was in 1 hour. I looked for a pub. The town was really quiet and I didn't meet people. At last, I found a pub. However, it was closed. They were opend at lunch and dinner time. Unwillingly, I had a break at a small shop with a chocolate bar.
You can't always get some pints at pubs everywhere in Britain.

Royal Brackla Distillery(11 May 2006)
Royal Brackla蒸留所は1812年にシェイクスピアのマクベスで有名なコーダー城の近くに建てられた。
1835年には当時の王、ウィリアム4世から蒸留所としては初のロイヤルワラントを授けられた。
1900年代に入ると経営は順調とは言えず、いくつかのオーナーが所有した後、1943年からはUD社の前身、SMDが所有していたが、1998年からバカルディ社の所有となっている。
インバネスやコーダーの町からも結構離れているし、鉄道からも離れている。創業当時はウィスキーの運搬も大変だったのではと思わせる農地の真ん中にある蒸留所。

It is the first distillery to be awarded the royal warrant from William IV in 1835.
However, management of the distillery was not succeeded during 1800s. Some owners had Royal Brackla Distillery. After that, SMD, the present UDV, took over the distillery in 1943. Now distillery has been owned by Bacardi since 1998, which is known as a producer of rum.
Royal Brackla Distillery isn't near Cawdor and Inverness, and it is off the railway. I think It was really difficulty to carry whisky when the distillery was established. It has been surrounded by farmlands.

5月上旬のスコットランドでは満開の菜の花畑をよく見かける。おそらく食用油のために栽培しているのだろうが日本ではこんな広い菜の花畑は見たことがない。
Cawderの町からRoyal Brackla蒸留所までの道の両側には牧草地と共に菜の花畑が広がっていた。
人は誰もいない。働いているのはミツバチだけだ。
I often see fields of full-blown rape blossoms at the beginning of May in Scotland. I think it would be for making cooking oil, but I haven't seen such a large field of rape blossoms in Japan.
There were rape blossom fields and glass fields which extended on both sides of the road from Cawdor to Royal Brackla Distillery. Nobody was on the fields. Only honeybees worked on the rape blossoms.

Red Cuillin(10 May 2006)
Glen Sligachanを挟んでBlack Cuillinの向かいにあるRed Cuillin。正式名称はThe Red Hillsと呼ばれる。花崗岩で構成されている複数の山が、スコットランドを代表する美しい景色を作り出す。
Black Cuillinと同じくRed Cuillinもエールの名前に付けられ、日本でも知られているが最近は見かけることが少なくなった。モルトウィスキーがあれほど揃うのに英国産のビールが手に入らないとは・・・
Red Cuillin is across Glen Sligachan from Black Cuillin. It's called The Red Hills formally. There are some mountains which are mainly composed of granitic rock. I think Red Cuillin is one of the best view point in Scotland.
Similarly Black Cuillin, Red Cuillin is named on bottle ale made in Isle of Skye. However, I can't get it in Japan these days. It is easy to get most bottles of malt whisky, but really difficult to get British Ale in Japan.

スコットランドでどこにでもいる羊。ほとんどは家畜だと思うけど、たまにとんでもない場所で見ることがある。飼い主は管理しているのだろうか。それとも野生？
Sligachanのキャンプ場で1人佇むブラックフェイス。周りに牧草地はない。さて、どこから来たのだろうか。
You can see sheep in Scotland anywhere. They probably would be farm animals, but I sometime see them in unexpected place. I wonder who their owner is, where their owner is, or if they are wild animals?
I saw a black face sheep which stand on the campsite in Sligachan. There is no grassland near Sligachan. I didn't know where he came from.

Isle of Skyeの最高峰、Cuillin Hillはエールの名前にも付けられ、日本でも知られている。標高は992mで英国の中では高い方。
私はスコットランドに初めて行った頃から、何を基準に"Ben"と"Hill"は区別されるのだろうか疑問に思っている。ヒュー・グラント主演の映画、"ウェールズの山"では1000フィート(約305m)以上は山となっていたがそれは1900年代初めのウェールズの話でイングランドの基準。スコットランドにはCuillin Hillより低い"Ben"はある。さて、その違いは・・・考え出すと夜も眠れない？
Black Cillin, the highest mountain in Isle of Skye, is famous for the name of bottle ale in Japan. The height is 992m, if anything higher mountain in UK.
I have had a question since I visited Scotland first time. What's difference between "Ben" and "Hill" in Scotland? According to the movie "The Englishman", mountain is more than 1000 feet. However it is the story of Wales in early 1900s and the standard of England. There are some "Hill" which is higher than "Ben" in Scotland.
I still haven't known about it.
Sligachan Hotel(10 May 2006)
SligachanはCarbestへの分岐点。しかし人が生活しているような賑わいはなく、1軒のホテルとキャンプ場があるだけ。しかしCillin Hillの眺めは最高で美しい風景を撮るには最高の場所。
そして休憩にはホテルのパブが最適。併設されているブリュワリーで作られているリアルエールが楽しめる。
また、このパブは観光バスツアーの休憩所になっているようでバスが着いたときだけ一瞬賑わう。
Sligachan is a junction to Carbest, however it is not lively. There is only one hotel and a campsite. And the view of Cillin Hill is amazing, it is one of the best point for taking photographs in Scotland.
And you can have a break at the pub with a pint of fresh cask ale made from brewery in the hotel.
Sligachan is crowded in a moment when buses for tour is arrived. It would be a resting place for bus tours.

日本でもお馴染みのBlack Cuillinを生産するIsle of Skye BreweryはUigの港のすぐ側にある。1995年から試験的に操業を開始して1998年からは本格的に稼働を始めた。現在は数種類のリアルエールとボトルエールを中心に季節限定品や地元のパブからの注文を受けてハウスエールを生産している。
見学は可能だけど私が訪れた時はメンテナンスのため、見学は出来ず、ショップで買い物をしただけ。出来たてのエールを飲みたくて行ったのだけど・・・
Isle of Skye Brewery is near the pier of Uig. They started brewing tentatively in 1995, and have produced in earnest since 1998. Now, they make some kind of bottle ale, cask ale, seasonal cask ale, and house ale for pubs.
When I visited Isle of Skye Brewery, they were closed for visitors because of maintenance. So I just bought some souvenires at their shop, though I wanted to drink a fresh ale from a tank.
The Paradise of Birds(10 May 2006)
Portreeからバスで30分程のUigはハリス島へのフェリーが発着する港町。といっても桟橋以外にはフェリーターミナル、ブリュワリー、レストランがあるのみ。海鳥たちは居心地が良さそうで水面に漂って寛いでいるようだった。
フェリーが着いたときだけ一瞬の賑わいを見せるだろうが午前の便が出たあとは潮騒と海鳥たちの鳴き声が聞こえるだけ。あと数時間、この静寂は続くだろう。
Uig, about 30 minutes to go from Portree by bus, is a small port town and a landing place for the ferry to Isle of Harris. There are just the ferry terminal, brewery, and a pub near the pier. Seabirds seems to be comfortable, floating on the water as though they were relaxing.
I heard just a note of seabirds and a sound of the sea. It would be crowded when a ferry was arrived. But the stillness would be likely to last for about a few hours.

Portree, Isle of Skye(2)
When I Wish Upon the Evening Sun(9 May 2006)
夕陽に願うことは明日の好天。きれいな夕焼けは明日の好天を表す。これは科学的根拠があると聞いたことがある。スコットランドでも同じだろう。
しかしきれいな夕陽を撮るのはタイミングが難しい。地平線や水平線に近づく程動きが速く感じる。あっという間に夕陽が見えなくなってしまう。
でもスコットランドではゆったりとした気持ちでカメラを構えることができるのはなぜだろうか。
A wish to the evening sun is a good weather tomorrow. In Japan, people say that if you see a beautiful sunset, tomorrow weather would be good. I think it is same in Scotland.
And it is really difficult to take a photograph for beautiful sunset. The speed of declining sun is really fast.
However, I can take photographs for sunset with composure in Scotland. I don't know why that is.
Isle of Skye Pipe Band(9 May 2006)
スカイ島での2回目の夕食はおいしいシーフード。食後のタリスカを飲んだ後も写真を撮るのには十分の明るさだった。ワインとウィスキーの酔いで気分がよかったので少し歩いていると、どこからかバグパイプが聞こえてきた。
どこかでCDでもかけているのかと思ったけどこれは生演奏。どこかで練習しているようだ。その音色の聞こえる方向へ歩いていくと駐車場で練習しているパイプバンドと出会った。イベントが近いのか行進しながらの演奏は真剣そのもの。最年少の男の子のはにかんだ笑顔が印象的だった。
It was still light outside after I had a dinner at a seafood restaurant on 2nd day in Isle of Skye, I thought I was able to take some photographs.
I walked around. After a while, I heard a sound of bagpipes. I thought that someone would probably be playing CDs somewhere, but it seemed to be a live performance.
I went toward a direction of the sound. So I met a pipe band who practice in the parking lot. They were really serious, I thought they would have a event in the near future.

Carbost, Isle of Skye(2)
Talisker Distillery(9 May 2006)
島で唯一残っているTalisker蒸留所は1831年の創業。その個性的な味わいは好みが分かれるところ。
かつては5ヶ所程の蒸留所が島にあったらしい。しかしこの島は農耕に適した土地が見当たらない。斜面が多く、ここがスコットランドかと疑うほど緑が少ない。少ない平地は町になり、その周辺に牧草地があるぐらいだ。島内でウィスキー造りに必要な原料が調達できたのか疑問に思う。
Talisker Distillery, which is only distillery in Isle of Skye, was established in 1831. Talisker single malt whisky has a strong flavour and unique taste.
It is said that some distilleries were in Isle of Skye. However, most lands is sloping, it isn't fit for agriculture. I don't think they were able to get barley in their neighbourhood.

"なぜ来ない"
Talisker蒸留所前のバス停には14時前に着いた。時刻表には14時のバスが記載されている。それから待つこと20分。一向にバスは来ない。時刻表を確認すると確かに14時のバスはある。注意書きには島の高校が休みの時は運行されないとなっているが今日は平日だし高校も授業があるだろう。もう少し待ってみよう。
そして1時間が過ぎた・・・どうやら今日は休校日だったようだ。なんでやねん！
まぁ、いいか。一昨日の雨でよく乾いていなかった靴や帽子をバス停横のベンチで干してしまおう。近くに咲いていたタンポポにはチョウが休憩していた。彼も何かを待っているのだろうか。
"Why doesn't the bus come?"
I arrived at 5 minutes to two PM at the bus stop in front of Talisker Distillery. According to a timetable, the bus to Portree left at 2 PM, and it was operated on the day of Portree High School was open. Today was Tuesday, so the bus must be operated today.
And 1 hour after, I knew that today was school holiday.
I had to wait about 1 hour, but I wasn't bored. There were a lot of good views and I got some good opportunities for a photograph.
A small butterfly was on the dandelion which was blooming near bus stop. He might be waiting something.

Talisker Distillery, which is only distillery in Isle of Skye, was established in 1831. Talisker single malt whisky has a strong flavour and unique taste.
It is said that some distilleries were in Isle of Skye. However, most lands is sloping, it isn't fit for agriculture. I don't think they were able to get barley in their neighbourhood.

"なぜ来ない"
Talisker蒸留所前のバス停には14時前に着いた。時刻表には14時のバスが記載されている。それから待つこと20分。一向にバスは来ない。時刻表を確認すると確かに14時のバスはある。注意書きには島の高校が休みの時は運行されないとなっているが今日は平日だし高校も授業があるだろう。もう少し待ってみよう。
そして1時間が過ぎた・・・どうやら今日は休校日だったようだ。なんでやねん！
まぁ、いいか。一昨日の雨でよく乾いていなかった靴や帽子をバス停横のベンチで干してしまおう。近くに咲いていたタンポポにはチョウが休憩していた。彼も何かを待っているのだろうか。
"Why doesn't the bus come?"
I arrived at 5 minutes to two PM at the bus stop in front of Talisker Distillery. According to a timetable, the bus to Portree left at 2 PM, and it was operated on the day of Portree High School was open. Today was Tuesday, so the bus must be operated today.
And 1 hour after, I knew that today was school holiday.
I had to wait about 1 hour, but I wasn't bored. There were a lot of good views and I got some good opportunities for a photograph.
A small butterfly was on the dandelion which was blooming near bus stop. He might be waiting something.

Talisker蒸留所のあるCarbostへはPortreeからバスで30分程。9時発のバスがあるので少し早めに朝食を済ませてバス停に行った。しかし9時を過ぎてもバスが来ない。おかしいと思って時刻表を確認すると翌週から運行されるバスだった。次のバスは1時前までない。
こういう時はTourist Informationが頼りになる。スタッフに聞くとタクシーで20ポンドぐらいで行けるとのこと。バス停近くに客待ちしているタクシーに乗って蒸留所に向かった。
There is Talisker Distillery in Carbost. It takes about for 30 minutes from Portree to Carbost by bus. According to the timetable I got by the internet when I was planning a tour, there was a bus to Carbost at 9 o'clock. I had a breakfast quickly and I went to bus stop in Portree. However, the bus didn't come. I checked the timetable again, and the bus was operated from next week. The next bus was at 1 PM.
If you have such a problem, you should go to a Tourist Information in Scotland. They are really reliable. I went to a Tourist Information near the bus stop. According to them, I was able to go to Carbost by taxi and the cost was about 20 pounds. I got on a waiting taxi near a bus stop, and I left for Carbost.

Talisker蒸留所を後にしたのが12時前。バスまでは2時間以上ある。写真を撮るにはたっぷりの時間がある。その前にまずは1杯とCarbostにある唯一のPub、Old Innに入る。期待通りに地元のリアルエールが2種類もある。こいつはいい。とりあえずRed Cuillin Real Aleとバゲットサンドイッチで腹ごしらえ。他のゲストがカウンター脇を通ってテラスに行っている。何かあるのかなと思い、食べ終わってテラスに出ると、それはもう素晴らしいの一言に尽きる眺め。天気もよく、時折爽やかな潮風が心地よい。この状況でエールを飲まないというのは不可能だった。
I left Talisker Distillery around noon. The next bus to Portree was in 2 hours. I had enough time for taking photographs. Before everything, I wanted to have a pint. I visited to The Old Inn, which was the only pub in Carbost. Fortunately, they had some kinds of ale, especially 2 local cask ales.
"Great!"
First, I ordered a pint of Red Cuillin Ale and Baguette Sandwich for my lunch. After I had a lunch, I went out to a terrace with a glass of ale. Then, I was able to see the beautiful scenery from the terrace. The weather was comfortable and sometimes a sea breeze blew lightly. I didn't know how I could resist ale in this situation.
Finally, I drank four pints of ale.

The First Pint in Isle of Skye(8 May 2006)
Portreeに着いたのは18:30頃。この季節のスコットランドはようやく日が暮れ始めた時間だった。宿に荷物を置いて夕食まで少しだけ町歩き。
そういえば今日はまだエールを飲んでいない。とりあえずはPubへ行こう。バス停近くのThe Isles Innを訪れる。カウンターにはハンドポンプがある。まずはそのリアルエールを楽しもう。
I arrived around thirty past six PM in Portree. The sunset came gradually. I went for a walk until having a dinner after I left my luggage at B&B.
Presently, I realized that I had not drunk ale today. I went to The Isles Inn near bus stop in Portree. There was a hand pump for cask ale on the bar counter. To begin with, let's start to drink a pint of cask ale.

The First Step in Isle of Skye(8 May 2006)
フェリーは港に着いた。事前にインターネットで入手した時刻表では15分後にPortree行のバスがあるはずなのでバス停に向かった。しかし時間になってもバスは来ない。よく見るとそのバスは2週間後からの運行だった。次のバスまで2時間ある。
さて、どうしたものか。AmadaleにはPubが見あたらない。というより何もない。
Ferry was arrived at Port Amadale. According to the timetable I got by the internet when I was planning a tour, there was a bus to Portree in 15 minutes. However, the bus didn't come although the time was coming. I checked the timetable, and I understood why the bus didn't come. The bus was operated from two weeks after. The next bus was in two hours.
In Amadale, there was no pub, no distillery, no castle. What should I do?

することがないのでバス停で待っていたけど風が強く寒いのでフェリーの待合室に移動。冷えた体にはウィスキー。旅行では常に携帯しているスキットルでウィスキータイムを楽しんでいた。
しばらくすると屋外からバグパイプの音色が聞こえてきた。何という幸運だろう、スコットランドでウィスキーを飲みながらバグパイプの生演奏を楽しめるなんて。次に来るバスが遅れてもいいと思ったのはこの時だけだった。
I was waiting next bus at bus stop, but it was windy and cold. So I got into a waiting room of ferry terminal, and I drank whisky from my hip flask. I always take it when I go trip.
After a while, sound of bagpipe was heard from outside. What a wonderful time I had! I enjoyed drinking whisky with a live bagpipe music. I thought I didn't mind if next bus was late.

The Way to Hogwarts(8 May 2006)
英国は世界で最初に鉄道が開通した国として知られている。そして現在英国で最も有名な鉄道はWest-Highland Railwayだろう。Fort William～Mallaig間の山間部をゆっくりと走る列車は日に3本程しか運行されないローカル線だけど6～10月の観光シーズンにThe Jacobite Steam Trainという蒸気機関車が運行される。これがHogwarts ExpressとしてHarry Potterの撮影に使用されている。
最大の見せ場は何と言ってもGlenfinnan Bridge。2作目の"秘密の部屋"ではHarryとRonの乗った自動車が追いかけられるシーンが印象的。この橋を通る時、カメラを手にしない乗客はいなかった。
UK is known as a first country which started to operate a railway. And now, I think the most famous rail way would be West-Highland railway in UK. It's a local line, there are about 3 trains a day and runs slowly in the mountains between Fort William and Mallaig. However, The Jacobite Steam Train is run during summer tourist season, June to October. That train is used in the movie "Harry Potter" as the Hogwarts Express.
The climax of this railway is Glenfinnan Bridge. The scene of second Harry Potter movie, "Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret ", which the car Harry and Ron rode was chased by Hogwarts Express on the bridge, is really impressive.
When a train went through the bridge, most passengers took a camera.
The Terminus(8 May 2006)
列車の時刻表を見るとMallaig到着5分後のフェリーと連絡しているように思える。でも5分間で列車からフェリーへ乗り換えなんて出来るの？
半ば諦めながら駅からフェリーターミナルへ向かって歩いている途中にフェリーは出発した。
まぁ、しょーがない。次のフェリーのチケットを買い、町を散策。Hogwarts Expressの終着駅は結構賑やかな港町。パブでのんびりするのも悪くない。魔法学校はないけれど。
According to railway timetable, the train seems to connect with the ferry which depart in 5 minutes after train arrived. I thought it was impossible to change from the train to the ferry. When I was walking to the ferry terminal from the station, the ferry left to Port Mallaig.
It came up to my expectation. I bought a ticket for next ferry and I walked around a town. Unexpectedly, Mallaig, the terminus of Hogwarts Express, was a pretty lively town. I thought it was not bad to have a break at public houses with some pints. Though the school of Witchcraft and Wizardry was not in the town.

Glenlochy Distillery(7 May 2006)
Fort Williamの中心から東へしばらく歩くと独特の形をしたキルンが見えてくる。
ウィスキーブーム末期の1898年に創業されたGlenlochy蒸留所はその後のいくつかの危機を乗り越えたが最終的に1983年に閉鎖された。現在はその建物がFlatやGuest Houseとして利用されている。
There was a distillery called Glenlochy in the east of Fort William. It was established in 1898, the end of Whisky Boom. After that, there were some crisis, but they got over them. However, it finally was closed in 1983.
Now, some buildings of Glenlochy Distillery are used as a flat and a guest house.
River Nevis Distillery(7 May 2006)
Ben Nevis山系から流れ出るRiver NevisはFort WilliamのGlenlochy蒸留所近くを流れてLoch Linnheに流れ込む。スコットランドには珍しい透明な水で美しい流れと緑が調和して非常に美しい。仕込水として使用していたGlenlochyの味に影響を与えているのだろう。
River Nevis is flown out from Ben Nevis, near Glenlochy Distillery in Fort William, into Loch Linnhe. The river has a clear water, really rare in Scotland. I think it's really beautiful with a flow and green harmonize.
Probably, the taste of Glenlochy which was being used as brewing water would be affected.

Ben Nevis Distillery(7 May 2006)
雨の降る中、20分程歩いてBen Nevis蒸留所に着いた。今日は日曜日なので蒸留所も静かだ。背後にあるBen Nevisも今日は見えない。時折カモメの鳴き声と隣の牧場にいるHighland Cattleの鼻息が聞こえる。
雨が弱くなるのを待って写真を撮る。曇り空の蒸留所も悪くはない。そして明日の好天を願って蒸留所を後にした。
After walking for about 20 minutes from Fort William in the rain, I arrived at Ben Nevis Distillery. It was really silent because of Sunday. I wasn't able to see Ben Nevis behind the distillery. Sometimes I heard a call of seagull and a snort of Highland Cattle at a farm next to the distillery.
I waited until rain got weak, and started to take photographs for the distillery. The distillery in cloudy weather was not so bad. After that I left Ben Nevis Distillery with a hope of fine weather tomorrow.

The highest mountain in Scotland, Ben Nevis is close to Fort William and modest height as a mountain for climbers, so many walkers climb Ben Nevis every year. However, don't make light of Ben Nevis, it's 1344m height. It takes for about 4 or 5 hours up on the route for ordinary walkers, but it would be impossible without a preparation for climbing. For me, I had better see Ben Nevis with a glass of Ben Nevis malt whisky.

Oban Distillery(6 May 2006)
Oban蒸留所の高い煙突は船の上からでもはっきりとわかる町のランドマーク。Isle of Mullへ向かうフェリーからもよく見える。
Obanに立ち寄った多くの旅人がこの姿を見ただろう。そしてObanを去る時、小さくなる煙突に旅愁を感じたことだろう。
The tall chimney of Oban Distillery is one of the landmark of Oban. You can see from the ferry to Isle of Mull.
Most traveleres who stopped at Oban would see the landmark, and when they saw the chimney which they saw to be small gradually at the departure from Oban, they would feel loneliness on a journey.
The McCaig's Tower(5 May 2006)
Oban蒸留所の煙突と共に町のランドマークになっているMcCaig's Towerは蒸留所の背後の高台にある。ギリシャのコロセウムに似た石造りの建造物は地元の銀行家が石工たちの仕事を増やすために1897年に建造工事を始めたが途中で本人が死去し、資金も底をついて工事は中止されたまま放置され、現在に至るという何ともしまらない話だ。
There are two landmark of Oban. One is the tall chimney of Oban Distillery, another is McCaig's Tower. It is on the hill behind the Oban Distillery. Tower is made by stone and similar to Colosseum in Rome.
The tower was built by a local banker in 1897 because of providing work for local stonemasons. However construction was interrupted because of death of him and the tower has remained these days.

There are two landmark of Oban. One is the tall chimney of Oban Distillery, another is McCaig's Tower. It is on the hill behind the Oban Distillery. Tower is made by stone and similar to Colosseum in Rome.
The tower was built by a local banker in 1897 because of providing work for local stonemasons. However construction was interrupted because of death of him and the tower has remained these days.

Obanの町中にある、Oban蒸留所は1794年創業の伝統的な小さな蒸留所。少ない平地を効率よく利用しているのは同じアーガイル地方のCampbeltownの蒸留所とよく似ている。また、今時珍しいコンピューターシステムで制御していない蒸留所でもある。もっとも現在導入を検討中とのことだったけど。
Oban was established in 1794 in the central area of Oban. It is a small, traditional distillery, which was made the best use of the small site.
I think Oban Distillery is similar to distilleries of Campbeltown in Argyle area. And it is the rare distillery which don't have a computer system, although they are considering to introduce it.

Obanはスコットランド西部の主要港の一つ。しかし1840年頃に蒸気船が利用するようになるまでは小さな漁港だった。その後、InvernessからCaledonian運河を経由してGlasgowまで向かう蒸気船も寄港地として利用するようになった。1880年に鉄道がObanまで建設され、その発展を加速させた。
現在もスコットランド西部の島々への起点として賑わっている。また港周辺には地元のおいしいシーフードが食べられるレストランや屋台がある。
Oban is a main port of western Scotland. However, it had been very small port for fishing boats until the steamers started arriving around 1840. After that, Oban was a regular stopping-off point for the steamers linking Inverness with Glasgow via the Caledonian canal. And the arrival of the railway in 1880 promoted its growing.
Now, Oban is the main point of departure for the Western Isles and you can enjoy eating good local seafood at restaurants and stalls near a pier.
