Cawdor (2)
Royal Brackla Distillery(11 May 2006)
コーダーの少し東の三叉路でバスは止まり、
"その道を南に行けば城に行けるよ"と運転手は私に教えてくれた。私は彼にお礼を言ってバスを降りた。バス停ではないけれど、コーダー城に行くと言ってチケットを買ったのでより近いところで降ろしてくれた。
目的地はコーダー城ではないけれど、蒸留所よりその近くの有名な観光地への行き方を尋ねる方が話が早い。スコットランド人全てがウィスキーに詳しいわけではない。
その三叉路から東へ更に2km程、写真を撮りながら20分ぐらい歩いた時、牧草地や菜の花畑に囲まれるRoyal Brackla蒸留所が見えた。
ようやく着いたという気持ちだったけどそこからまだもう少し歩かなければいけない。でも蒸留所が見えて少しは気が楽になった。
The bus was stopped at the intersection on the east of Cawdor.
"You can go to Cawdor Castle to the south." the bus driver said to me. I gave thanks to him and got off the bus. The bus was stopped near Cawdor Castle as I said I went to the Castle when I bought a ticket.
My destination was not the Castle, but if I asked the way to the distillery, someone would not know about the distillery. Not all Scottish know about whisky very well.
And When I walked for about 2km from the intersection to the east and took some photographs, I saw Royal Brackla Distillery surrounded by glass fields and rape blossoms fields.
I thought that I arrived the distillery at last, but I had to walk to the distillery more a short distance. However I was really happy because of seeing Royal Brackla Distillery.

Royal Brackla蒸留所は1812年にシェイクスピアのマクベスで有名なコーダー城の近くに建てられた。
1835年には当時の王、ウィリアム4世から蒸留所としては初のロイヤルワラントを授けられた。
1900年代に入ると経営は順調とは言えず、いくつかのオーナーが所有した後、1943年からはUD社の前身、SMDが所有していたが、1998年からバカルディ社の所有となっている。
インバネスやコーダーの町からも結構離れているし、鉄道からも離れている。創業当時はウィスキーの運搬も大変だったのではと思わせる農地の真ん中にある蒸留所。
Royal Brackla Distillery was built in 1812 near Cawdor Castle, which is famous for Macbeth of Shakespeare.
It is the first distillery to be awarded the royal warrant from William IV in 1835.
However, management of the distillery was not succeeded during 1800s. Some owners had Royal Brackla Distillery. After that, SMD, the present UDV, took over the distillery in 1943. Now distillery has been owned by Bacardi since 1998, which is known as a producer of rum.
Royal Brackla Distillery isn't near Cawdor and Inverness, and it is off the railway. I think It was really difficulty to carry whisky when the distillery was established. It has been surrounded by farmlands.

Red Cuillin(10 May 2006)
Glen Sligachanを挟んでBlack Cuillinの向かいにあるRed Cuillin。正式名称はThe Red Hillsと呼ばれる。花崗岩で構成されている複数の山が、スコットランドを代表する美しい景色を作り出す。
Black Cuillinと同じくRed Cuillinもエールの名前に付けられ、日本でも知られているが最近は見かけることが少なくなった。モルトウィスキーがあれほど揃うのに英国産のビールが手に入らないとは・・・
Red Cuillin is across Glen Sligachan from Black Cuillin. It's called The Red Hills formally. There are some mountains which are mainly composed of granitic rock. I think Red Cuillin is one of the best view point in Scotland.
Similarly Black Cuillin, Red Cuillin is named on bottle ale made in Isle of Skye. However, I can't get it in Japan these days. It is easy to get most bottles of malt whisky, but really difficult to get British Ale in Japan.

Isle of Skyeの最高峰、Cuillin Hillはエールの名前にも付けられ、日本でも知られている。標高は992mで英国の中では高い方。
私はスコットランドに初めて行った頃から、何を基準に"Ben"と"Hill"は区別されるのだろうか疑問に思っている。ヒュー・グラント主演の映画、"ウェールズの山"では1000フィート(約305m)以上は山となっていたがそれは1900年代初めのウェールズの話でイングランドの基準。スコットランドにはCuillin Hillより低い"Ben"はある。さて、その違いは・・・考え出すと夜も眠れない？

日本でもお馴染みのBlack Cuillinを生産するIsle of Skye BreweryはUigの港のすぐ側にある。1995年から試験的に操業を開始して1998年からは本格的に稼働を始めた。現在は数種類のリアルエールとボトルエールを中心に季節限定品や地元のパブからの注文を受けてハウスエールを生産している。
見学は可能だけど私が訪れた時はメンテナンスのため、見学は出来ず、ショップで買い物をしただけ。出来たてのエールを飲みたくて行ったのだけど・・・
Isle of Skye Brewery is near the pier of Uig. They started brewing tentatively in 1995, and have produced in earnest since 1998. Now, they make some kind of bottle ale, cask ale, seasonal cask ale, and house ale for pubs.
When I visited Isle of Skye Brewery, they were closed for visitors because of maintenance. So I just bought some souvenires at their shop, though I wanted to drink a fresh ale from a tank.

When I Wish Upon the Evening Sun(9 May 2006)
夕陽に願うことは明日の好天。きれいな夕焼けは明日の好天を表す。これは科学的根拠があると聞いたことがある。スコットランドでも同じだろう。
しかしきれいな夕陽を撮るのはタイミングが難しい。地平線や水平線に近づく程動きが速く感じる。あっという間に夕陽が見えなくなってしまう。
でもスコットランドではゆったりとした気持ちでカメラを構えることができるのはなぜだろうか。
A wish to the evening sun is a good weather tomorrow. In Japan, people say that if you see a beautiful sunset, tomorrow weather would be good. I think it is same in Scotland.
And it is really difficult to take a photograph for beautiful sunset. The speed of declining sun is really fast.
However, I can take photographs for sunset with composure in Scotland. I don't know why that is.

島で唯一残っているTalisker蒸留所は1831年の創業。その個性的な味わいは好みが分かれるところ。
かつては5ヶ所程の蒸留所が島にあったらしい。しかしこの島は農耕に適した土地が見当たらない。斜面が多く、ここがスコットランドかと疑うほど緑が少ない。少ない平地は町になり、その周辺に牧草地があるぐらいだ。島内でウィスキー造りに必要な原料が調達できたのか疑問に思う。
Talisker Distillery, which is only distillery in Isle of Skye, was established in 1831. Talisker single malt whisky has a strong flavour and unique taste.
It is said that some distilleries were in Isle of Skye. However, most lands is sloping, it isn't fit for agriculture. I don't think they were able to get barley in their neighbourhood.

Talisker蒸留所のあるCarbostへはPortreeからバスで30分程。9時発のバスがあるので少し早めに朝食を済ませてバス停に行った。しかし9時を過ぎてもバスが来ない。おかしいと思って時刻表を確認すると翌週から運行されるバスだった。次のバスは1時前までない。
こういう時はTourist Informationが頼りになる。スタッフに聞くとタクシーで20ポンドぐらいで行けるとのこと。バス停近くに客待ちしているタクシーに乗って蒸留所に向かった。
There is Talisker Distillery in Carbost. It takes about for 30 minutes from Portree to Carbost by bus. According to the timetable I got by the internet when I was planning a tour, there was a bus to Carbost at 9 o'clock. I had a breakfast quickly and I went to bus stop in Portree. However, the bus didn't come. I checked the timetable again, and the bus was operated from next week. The next bus was at 1 PM.
If you have such a problem, you should go to a Tourist Information in Scotland. They are really reliable. I went to a Tourist Information near the bus stop. According to them, I was able to go to Carbost by taxi and the cost was about 20 pounds. I got on a waiting taxi near a bus stop, and I left for Carbost.

Portreeに着いたのは18:30頃。この季節のスコットランドはようやく日が暮れ始めた時間だった。宿に荷物を置いて夕食まで少しだけ町歩き。
そういえば今日はまだエールを飲んでいない。とりあえずはPubへ行こう。バス停近くのThe Isles Innを訪れる。カウンターにはハンドポンプがある。まずはそのリアルエールを楽しもう。
I arrived around thirty past six PM in Portree. The sunset came gradually. I went for a walk until having a dinner after I left my luggage at B&B.
Presently, I realized that I had not drunk ale today. I went to The Isles Inn near bus stop in Portree. There was a hand pump for cask ale on the bar counter. To begin with, let's start to drink a pint of cask ale.

フェリーは港に着いた。事前にインターネットで入手した時刻表では15分後にPortree行のバスがあるはずなのでバス停に向かった。しかし時間になってもバスは来ない。よく見るとそのバスは2週間後からの運行だった。次のバスまで2時間ある。
さて、どうしたものか。AmadaleにはPubが見あたらない。というより何もない。
Ferry was arrived at Port Amadale. According to the timetable I got by the internet when I was planning a tour, there was a bus to Portree in 15 minutes. However, the bus didn't come although the time was coming. I checked the timetable, and I understood why the bus didn't come. The bus was operated from two weeks after. The next bus was in two hours.
In Amadale, there was no pub, no distillery, no castle. What should I do?

The Way to Hogwarts(8 May 2006)
英国は世界で最初に鉄道が開通した国として知られている。そして現在英国で最も有名な鉄道はWest-Highland Railwayだろう。Fort William～Mallaig間の山間部をゆっくりと走る列車は日に3本程しか運行されないローカル線だけど6～10月の観光シーズンにThe Jacobite Steam Trainという蒸気機関車が運行される。これがHogwarts ExpressとしてHarry Potterの撮影に使用されている。
最大の見せ場は何と言ってもGlenfinnan Bridge。2作目の"秘密の部屋"ではHarryとRonの乗った自動車が追いかけられるシーンが印象的。この橋を通る時、カメラを手にしない乗客はいなかった。

It's a local line, there are about 3 trains a day and runs slowly in the mountains between Fort William and Mallaig. However, The Jacobite Steam Train is run during summer tourist season, June to October. That train is used in the movie "Harry Potter" as the Hogwarts Express.
The climax of this railway is Glenfinnan Bridge. The scene of second Harry Potter movie, "Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret ", which the car Harry and Ron rode was chased by Hogwarts Express on the bridge, is really impressive.
When a train went through the bridge, most passengers took a camera.

ウィスキーブーム末期の1898年に創業されたGlenlochy蒸留所はその後のいくつかの危機を乗り越えたが最終的に1983年に閉鎖された。現在はその建物がFlatやGuest Houseとして利用されている。
There was a distillery called Glenlochy in the east of Fort William. It was established in 1898, the end of Whisky Boom. After that, there were some crisis, but they got over them. However, it finally was closed in 1983.
Now, some buildings of Glenlochy Distillery are used as a flat and a guest house.

Fort William(1)
Ben Nevis Distillery(7 May 2006)
雨の降る中、20分程歩いてBen Nevis蒸留所に着いた。今日は日曜日なので蒸留所も静かだ。背後にあるBen Nevisも今日は見えない。時折カモメの鳴き声と隣の牧場にいるHighland Cattleの鼻息が聞こえる。
雨が弱くなるのを待って写真を撮る。曇り空の蒸留所も悪くはない。そして明日の好天を願って蒸留所を後にした。
After walking for about 20 minutes from Fort William in the rain, I arrived at Ben Nevis Distillery. It was really silent because of Sunday. I wasn't able to see Ben Nevis behind the distillery. Sometimes I heard a call of seagull and a snort of Highland Cattle at a farm next to the distillery.
I waited until rain got weak, and started to take photographs for the distillery. The distillery in cloudy weather was not so bad. After that I left Ben Nevis Distillery with a hope of fine weather tomorrow.

After walking for about 20 minutes from Fort William in the rain, I arrived at Ben Nevis Distillery. It was really silent because of Sunday. I wasn't able to see Ben Nevis behind the distillery. Sometimes I heard a call of seagull and a snort of Highland Cattle at a farm next to the distillery.
I waited until rain got weak, and started to take photographs for the distillery. The distillery in cloudy weather was not so bad. After that I left Ben Nevis Distillery with a hope of fine weather tomorrow.

Oban蒸留所の高い煙突は船の上からでもはっきりとわかる町のランドマーク。Isle of Mullへ向かうフェリーからもよく見える。
Obanに立ち寄った多くの旅人がこの姿を見ただろう。そしてObanを去る時、小さくなる煙突に旅愁を感じたことだろう。
The tall chimney of Oban Distillery is one of the landmark of Oban. You can see from the ferry to Isle of Mull.
Most traveleres who stopped at Oban would see the landmark, and when they saw the chimney which they saw to be small gradually at the departure from Oban, they would feel loneliness on a journey.

Obanの町中にある、Oban蒸留所は1794年創業の伝統的な小さな蒸留所。少ない平地を効率よく利用しているのは同じアーガイル地方のCampbeltownの蒸留所とよく似ている。また、今時珍しいコンピューターシステムで制御していない蒸留所でもある。もっとも現在導入を検討中とのことだったけど。
Oban was established in 1794 in the central area of Oban. It is a small, traditional distillery, which was made the best use of the small site.
I think Oban Distillery is similar to distilleries of Campbeltown in Argyle area. And it is the rare distillery which don't have a computer system, although they are considering to introduce it.

The Caledonian Canal(10 May 2003)
カレドニアン運河はInvernessから西海岸のFort Williamをつなぐ約90kmの運河で、James Wattの30年に渡る調査の後、1803年からThomas Telford(Craigellachie Bridgeの設計者)による設計の元、計画が進められた。完成予定を大幅に過ぎた1822年にようやく開通した運河は当初の計画を大幅に縮小したものになった。
1847年に第二期工事が完成し、当初の計画通りになった運河は当時、Invernessから西海岸へ行く最速ルートとして利用された。鉄道がInvernessまで到達した後もGlasgowへ行くには運河を使う蒸気船の方が早く着いたという。
この運河の辺にGlen Albyn蒸留所は1846年に、Glen Mhor蒸留所は1892年に建設された。しかし1980年代のウィスキー不況の時代にMillburn蒸留所と共に閉鎖され、Invernessの蒸留所はすべて失われた。現在跡地はショッピングセンターとなり、蒸留所があったことは全くわからない。
Millburn蒸留所と違い、広い敷地を持つ両蒸留所はその広さ故、別の使い方をしたほうが良いと判断されたのかも知れない。

It was started in 1803 to plans produced by Thomas Telford, who build the Craigellachie Bridge in 1814, following survey work by James Watt thirty years earlier. It was finally opened in 1822, which was badly behind in the schedule. However it was reduced from original plan.
When a second phase of construction was finished in 1847, the canal became originally proposed. At that time, it was the fastest route between Inverness and Western Scotland. Nonetheless, until the railway reached Inverness the quickest way from there to Glasgow was by steamship via the Caledonian Canal.
There were two distilleries, Glen Albyn and Glen Mhor beside the canal. Two of them and Millburn Distillery were closed in 1980's, during depression of whisky, and all of distilleries in Inverness was lost. Now, the shopping centre has been built on the site of Glen Albyn and Glen Mhor. And people wouldn't realize that distilleries had been there.

Dingwallからバスに乗ってMuir of Ordまでのチケットを求める。蒸留所へ行くことを伝えると、幹線道路から蒸留所方面へ行く支道との分かれ道で降ろしてくれた。そこから少し歩き、大きなOrd Maltingの建物の横を過ぎると蒸留所のキルンが見えてきた。近づくと駐車場から黒い影が一斉に茂みへ向かう。野うさぎ達を驚かしてしまったようだ。土曜日なので人も少なく、駐車場でミーティングでもしていたのかな。
I got on a bus to Inverness and bought a ticket to Muir of Ord, and I told the bus driver that I went to Glen Ord Distillery. The driver stopped the bus at a junction of a branch road to distillery. I walked for about 10 minutes after I got off the bus. I passed beside the large building of Glen Ord maltings, then I came in sight a malt kiln and warehouse. Suddenly, something were scattered to a bush. I seemed to surprise wild rabbits.. They may have had a meeting at a car park.

Brora(4)

隣接する場所に蒸留所を建てることは珍しくないようでスコットランドにはいくつかの隣り合った蒸留所や同一敷地内に2つの蒸留所が見られる。そのほとんどは生産力の強化だろうけどClynelishとBroraの関係は少し違う。生産設備の改築目的で建てられた新しいClynelishが安定稼働した段階で閉鎖される予定だったのかも知れない。閉鎖する口実としては1980年代のウィスキー不況はちょうどよかったのかも。
理由はどうであれ、閉鎖されてから30年以上経つBroraは残り少ない貴重なモルトウィスキーになってしまった。

Alnessの町の西側、River Averon沿いにあるTeaninich蒸留所は1817年に創設となっているがAlfred Barnardの著書には1800年と記述されている。Alness周辺は古くからウィスキーの密造が盛んな地域でそのあたりが関係しているのかも知れない。
1934年にUDV社の前身であるScottish Malt Distillersが買収し、1970年代前半には近代的設備に改装され、古い建物はすべて取り壊されてしまった。その時にUDV社の共通仕様である大きなガラス窓のStill Houseが建てられた。
現在はUDV社の中でも最大級の生産能力のある蒸留所で生産能力は約600万リットルとなっている。ちなみに19世紀末は約36万リットルの生産量だった。ドランブイの原酒となっていると聞いたこともあるが定かではない。

However, according to The Whisky Distilleries in UK, written by Alfred Barnard, it was established in 1800. Alness and surrounding areas were very thriving area of making whisky. Teaninich may have been started before.
Teaninich Distillery was taken over by Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd.(present UDV) in 1934, and it was rebuild to modern equipments in the first half of 1970.
Now, Teaninich is one of the most productive distillery in distilleies of UDV and annual output is about 6 million liters, though annual output was about 360,000 liters in the end of 19th.
I've heard that Teaninich malt whisky was blended into the Drambuie, but I don't know for certain.

Dalmore Distillery(9 May 2003)
Dalmore蒸留所に着いたのはちょうど昼休み時。事務所には誰もいなかった。予約はしていないのでちょっと心配になる。見学者用施設はないが見学させてくれるはずだ。1時を回ったので再度事務所を訪れるとマネージャが笑顔で出迎えてくれた。さっそく所内を案内してもらう。広い敷地と大きなウェアハウス、そして独特の形をしたポットスティルとキルン。私にとっては非常に印象に残る蒸留所だった。
見学後、事務所に戻って試飲タイム、というよりはマネージャと二人でウィスキーの話をしながらダルモアを飲んだ。英会話を始めてちょうど1年で英語力にはまだ自信がなかったがウィスキー好きの酔っぱらいの間には国境はもちろん言葉の壁もない。
I arrived at Dalmore Distillery about half past twelve, just lunch break. Nobody was in the manager's office. I didn't have an appointment, but I thought that I would probably be able to see in distillery.
I visited the manager's office again around thirteen o'clock, so manager greeted me with a smile. Then he guided me in the distillery.
Dalmore Distillery was on the large site, had large warehouses, unique shape of kiln, and pot stills. I felt Dalmore Distillery was really impressive distillery.
After that, we returned to office and I had a tasting of Dalmore single malt whisky. In a minute, manager also started to drink whisky, and talked about whisky with me. It was like drinking with friends at a pub rather than a tasting. When I visited to Dalmore Distillery, I wasn't much good at English conversation. However there was no border, no wall of language between the two of whisky drinkers.
