Port Ellen(1)
Port Ellen Distillery(22 April 2004)
Glasgow Airportの近くのHoliday Innに宿泊した私は9:00のIslay行きに搭乗するためにホテルを出た。外は雨が降っている。さっそくのScotch Weatherの歓迎。
Islayまでの飛行機は日本のYS-11に似たプロペラ機。スコットランドでは離島便はプロペラ機がまだまだ主役だ。悪天候はあまりありがたくない。離陸するときになって更にひどくなってきた。
幸いにも飛行中は揺れもせず、着陸態勢に入る頃には雲が切れ、晴れ間が見えてきた。
"蒸留所が見えるかな？"
と期待したのだけど、見えたのは港町の側にある工場だった。あれがPort Ellen？でも赤い屋根のキルンがなかった・・・
数日後、Port Ellenに向かうバスの中から蒸留所を見たとき、建物が減っているのがわかった。既に取り壊し工事が完了したようでシンボル的な大きなキルンはない。蒸留所設備も取り除かれたようだ。ただ、Islayのウィスキー造りに携わっていることを主張するように大きなピート置き場にピートがたくさんあった。
I left Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport. It was not good weather. I had to get on a 9:00 flight to Isle of Islay.
That flight was a propeller plane, so bad weather was not welcome. When the plane took off, it rained strong.
Mercifully, the weather was getting better and I could see the island on the plane.
"Where is Port Ellen Distillery?"
But I saw only a plant near a small port town. I didn't think it was Port Ellen Distillery. Because there was no red roofed malt kiln.
A few days later, I took the bus from Bowmore to Port Ellen. When I passed thought the side of Port Ellen Distillery, I knew that some buildings of distillery were demolished. There was not a red roofed kiln, it had been demolished.
Just they had a large peat shed on the plant, as if it insist on relation of making whisky in Islay.

目覚めると外はまだ薄暗く、今日も天気が悪いことを予感させた。いつもよりも日の出が遅い感じだ。でもちょっと様子が違う。窓を開けると非常に濃い霧が町を包んでいた。
この天候で船は出るのだろうか。
不安を胸に港へ向かうとCaledonian MacBrayneのフェリーはちゃんと桟橋にあり、出港準備の最中だった。
フェリーは遅れることもなく定刻どおりに港を離れ、Kennacraigへ向かった。見る見る間に霧が町を包み隠し、そこには島などないように5分もしないうちに見えなくなった。これじゃ船から蒸留所の写真も撮れない。
自然に守られたウィスキーの島。その別れは一瞬だった。
I felt today was not good weather, when I woke up. But today was not same as always. Town was enveloped in the thick fog.
I was afraid of the cancellation of ferry. I wanted to go to Campbeltown today.
I went to the harbour with my uneasiness. But there was the CalMac Ferry in the piar, and they got ready for departer.
The ferry left harbour for Kennacraig on time, and the harbour and town was covered with fog in a moment, as if fog guard the island. A fiew minute later, I couldn't see anything.
For Isle of Islay, nature is the best guardian.

スコットランドに限らず、島を離れる時というのは特別な想いがあるのですがIslayは特別ですね。
この気持ちは行かないとわからないでしょう。私も、もう一度行きたいです。
